MR HART ASKED THE MINISTER FOR TOURISM, MAJOR EVENTS, SMALL BUSINESS AND THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES (MRS STUCKEY)—

QUESTION:

Will the Minister advise permanent infrastructure projects planned for the

Commonwealth Games in 2018 that will benefit the Burleigh Electorate and

leave an ongoing legacy to the community?

ANSWER:

A major goal in staging the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will be

the delivery of significant and positive economic, environmental, social and

community legacy benefits to the Gold Coast and the broader south-east

Queensland region.

The Candidate City file (bid book) lodged with the Commonwealth Games

Federation describes how the Gold Coast City’s venue strategy for sports

venues adopts the principles of locating both competition and training venues

within 20 minutes travel time of the Games village, where possible. The

Games Village is to be located at Southport, however the Gold Coast City

venues located further than 20 minutes from the Village and in the southern

direction include the Merv Craig Sporting Complex at Elanora / Currumbin

Valley and the Robina Stadium. Both these sporting venues border on the

Burleigh Electorate.

The Elanora / Currumbin Valley area will provide a picturesque location for the

road racing elements of the cycling programme. Commencing and finishing at

the Merv Craig Sporting Complex, the road race looped circuit provides for a

range of areas where spectators will be able to view the event.

The Robina Stadium (Skilled Park), which will host the Rugby 7s competition,

has a current capacity of 27,400 spectators and is considered one of the best

regional stadiums in Australia. The Stadium requires minimal overlay to meet

the competition needs of the International Rugby Board.

One of the key benefits for the communities of Miami, Mermaid Beach, Varsity

Lakes and Palm Beach will be the profound social legacy of the Games. The

Games will ignite the passion and pride of the Gold Coast people and unite all

the Gold Coast communities. Hosting the Games will create wonderful

engagement opportunities for our young people to connect and create lasting

bonds with young people from other Commonwealth countries.

After the Games finish, both the Merv Craig Sporting Complex and Skilled

Stadium will provide community sports and elite training facilities for current

and future athletes, which will have significant long lasting social and

community legacy benefits to the Gold Coast region including the Burleigh

electorate community.

The electorate of Burleigh and its residents can be assured that gaining the

Commonwealth Games for the Gold Coast City at this time of global financial

stress is the most important economic boost the Gold Coast could receive. It

is expected to return $2 billion in economic benefits and create 30,000 jobs.
