MR HART ASKED THE MINISTER FOR TOURISM, MAJOR EVENTS, SMALL BUSINESS AND THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES (MRS STUCKEY)—
Will the Minister advise permanent infrastructure projects planned for the
Commonwealth Games in 2018 that will benefit the Burleigh Electorate and
leave an ongoing legacy to the community?
A major goal in staging the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will be
the delivery of significant and positive economic, environmental, social and
community legacy benefits to the Gold Coast and the broader south-east
The Candidate City file (bid book) lodged with the Commonwealth Games
Federation describes how the Gold Coast City’s venue strategy for sports
venues adopts the principles of locating both competition and training venues
within 20 minutes travel time of the Games village, where possible. The
Games Village is to be located at Southport, however the Gold Coast City
venues located further than 20 minutes from the Village and in the southern
direction include the Merv Craig Sporting Complex at Elanora / Currumbin
Valley and the Robina Stadium. Both these sporting venues border on the
The Elanora / Currumbin Valley area will provide a picturesque location for the
road racing elements of the cycling programme. Commencing and finishing at
the Merv Craig Sporting Complex, the road race looped circuit provides for a
range of areas where spectators will be able to view the event.
The Robina Stadium (Skilled Park), which will host the Rugby 7s competition,
has a current capacity of 27,400 spectators and is considered one of the best
regional stadiums in Australia. The Stadium requires minimal overlay to meet
the competition needs of the International Rugby Board.
One of the key benefits for the communities of Miami, Mermaid Beach, Varsity
Lakes and Palm Beach will be the profound social legacy of the Games. The
Games will ignite the passion and pride of the Gold Coast people and unite all
the Gold Coast communities. Hosting the Games will create wonderful
engagement opportunities for our young people to connect and create lasting
bonds with young people from other Commonwealth countries.
After the Games finish, both the Merv Craig Sporting Complex and Skilled
Stadium will provide community sports and elite training facilities for current
and future athletes, which will have significant long lasting social and
community legacy benefits to the Gold Coast region including the Burleigh
The electorate of Burleigh and its residents can be assured that gaining the
Commonwealth Games for the Gold Coast City at this time of global financial
stress is the most important economic boost the Gold Coast could receive. It
is expected to return $2 billion in economic benefits and create 30,000 jobs.
