Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey and Michael Hart are urging Burleigh residents to not wait until they are caught in the middle of a summer storm to wish they were better prepared.

Mr Dempsey launched the Queensland State Emergency Service (SES) and NRMA Insurance Weather the Storm campaign on Tuesday, saying the best time to prepare for an emergency was now.

“Queenslanders are no strangers to severe weather and we know all too well that it can strike at any time, without much warning and with the potential to be very destructive,” Mr Dempsey said.

“Last storm season, some people were caught unprepared and did not have the supplies and equipment they needed.

“The aim today is to ensure every Queenslander can weather the storm this summer by planning ahead.”

Mr Dempsey said there was a number of simple steps Burleigh residents could take to ensure they were best prepared for the storm season.

“A home emergency kit, filled with essentials like batteries, drinking water and canned food, and a clear family emergency plan are a crucial part of making sure your family is best prepared for an emergency,” he said.

Michael Hart said some preparations were as simple as having a conversation around the dinner table.

“Each family member needs to know what to do in the case of severe weather and know how to familiarise themselves with storm warnings and how to access vital information and updates during a severe weather event,” Mr Hart said.

Michael Hart urged all those with health problems to ensure they would be able to access their medication in the event of severe weather.
