Burleigh Celebrates Grandparents Day
Burleigh residents are being encouraged to recognise the important role grandparents play in our families and communities, as part of Grandparents Day celebrations on Sunday 26 October.
Member for Burleigh Michael Hart MP said Grandparents Day was a chance to thank grandparents for their love and support.
“Grandparents make a significant contribution to their families and communities, so this annual celebration gives us a chance to show them how much we care,” Mr Hart said.
“It can be as simple as a phone call, a morning tea or a Sunday roast. You could bake your grandparents a cake, make them a card or get together for a family barbeque.
“Schools, child care centres and community groups are also encouraged to hold special events to recognise grandparents.”
The theme of Grandparents Day 2014 is ‘Make your grandparent’s day!’
Mr Hart said that grandparents increasingly did more than just spoil their grandchildren, as many were volunteers in their local community and carers of their grandchildren.
“We can’t underestimate the importance of grandparents, especially those who care for their children full-time or regularly,” he said.
“We know that around 937,000 Australian children receive child care from a grandparent on a regular basis.
“Grandparents Day is a perfect opportunity for us all to thank our grandmothers and grandfathers and let them know how much we appreciate having them in our lives.”
The Queensland Government has developed a suite of resources to help celebrate Grandparents Day, including downloadable thank you cards, bookmarks and certificates of recognition for grandparents.
