Grieving Burleigh families to receive recognition
Member for Burleigh Michael Hart MP has welcomed a new initiative that will bring comfort to grieving families who have experienced early pregnancy loss.
Mr Hart said the new In Loving Memory commemorative certificates would allow parents to honour a lost little one.
“Every parent knows that feeling of excitement and anticipation when a baby is on the way, but sadly one in four families experience an early pregnancy loss, or miscarriage.
“Early pregnancy loss can be devastating and research has found loss acknowledgement and memory creation helps parents who are enduring a tragedy. That’s what these certificates are about.
“Parents will now have something tangible that acknowledges that their little one existed and was loved. The memory of a lost child should be cherished as well as mourned.
“I and the Government are committed to assisting families in any way possible and I hope this will bring some comfort to parents during a very sad time.”
Parents who experience early pregnancy loss up to 20 weeks gestation are eligible for the certificates free of charge from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. There are already certificates available for a pregnancy loss after 20 weeks gestation.
The certificates are optional and come in two different designs. Eligibility is retrospective and parents can also include as much or as little information on the certificate as they wish.
More information on the certificates can be found online: www.qld.gov.au/bdm
