School safety boost
 

Caningeraba State School will benefit from flashing lights as part of the Newman Government’s commitment to ramp up safety around school zones.

 

Member for Burleigh Michael Hart MP said the $10 million program is aimed at installing school flashing lights on roads across Queensland to improve the safety of school students and families.

 

“Flashing lights are due to be installed this month and will alert motorists as they’re approaching a school zone,” Mr Hart said.

 

“School lights are being installed at schools where there is a significant crash history, high level of car and pedestrian traffic, higher speed limits or visibility problems.

 

“The Newman Government is committed to the safety of all Queenslanders on our roads – especially our littlest ones and flashing school lights will ensure an extra safety boost around school zones.

 

“The signs act as an extra reminder for parents and other motorists to slow down in and around school areas while young Queenslanders made their way to and from school.

 

“Motorists need to remember children are unpredictable when crossing streets and by slowing down you are diffusing a potentially dangerous situation.”

 

The Newman Government has committed $10 million over four years to install flashing school light at over 300 school zones.

 

Background

 

During 1 January to 30 September 2013, there were 22,365 speeding infringements issued in school zones.  This is 24 per cent greater than the same period for 2012.  Of the 22,365 speeding infringements, 251 were issued to drivers travelling between 31 and 40 km/h above the speed limit and 21 were issued to drivers travelling more than 40 km/h above the speed limit.
