Southern Coastal Light Rail Airport Link

Member for Burleigh Michael Hart MP responds to today’s announcement by Council in the Gold Coast Bulletin regarding intentions for the light rail to travel South to Burleigh and along the coast to the airport.

“I have been one of the most vocal supporters in bringing the light rail South to Burleigh however this proposal is a flat out waste of tax-payer dollars” Mr Hart said.

“The engineering required alone to cross the rivers and narrow corridors through Palm Beach will see costs blow out exceptionally high – the route just doesn’t make sense and will struggle to be funded.”

“Especially when you have the alternative option, the one I have always supported, to bring the light rail South to Burleigh then West to link with the heavy rail at Varsity Lakes to follow the existing earmarked corridor to the airport.”

“Linking the two rail services at Varsity Lakes will provide better transportation options to more Gold Coast residents and service the needs of tourists at a much lower cost than a Coastal route which will neglect our inner suburbs.”

“By directing the light rail West, we’ll reduce congestion on our residential streets and make it easier for Burleigh and Gold Coast commuters to get to and from work so they can spend more time with their family and less time travelling.

“I haven’t been contacted about a Southern coastal route for light rail and I do not support the proposal.”
